So the titanic battle of the Diesel powered sports prototypes at the 2007 Le Mans 24 hour race is shaping up. The home team is prepping their entry to take on the dominators from Ingolstadt. I can’t wait for June!

What’s up with that gigantic cockpit? It’s both tall and wide. Did they get some Dinka tribesman to drive this thing? And with that big cockpit it looks like they had to move the intakes outboard of the center section. Looks like a lot more aerodynamic drag with all that structure up in the breeze.
The car is very low Dan, so the cockpit only LOOKs huge. Sports car racing, like all racing, has a host of silly rules, and they are different from “open” and “closed” cars, so teams pick one category and fit within those rule-sets. Those are brake cooling ducts, not engine intakes. The engine breathes through the front of the cars on either side of the cockpit. The Audi R10s have very similar duct work for the rear brakes.
Dan, having had a bit of background in the *racy game,* you can rest *assured* that what you see is VERY near the optimal aerodynamic ‘envelope’ for this car. these guys look for ANY advantage and if it coulda een lower, they’da made it that way!
To me, *these* are the epitome of automotive engineering, not F1. F1’s don’ gotta run for 24 hours, WFO…;)
