Car Photo of the Day: Name that car.

It is something of a Mutt, so a point to anyone (other than MarkC, who was on this event with me) who can ID either the car or the engine, both of which are fairly unique. Ãœber-car-geekdom awaits the one who knows it all.

  1. Now what manner of sorcery is this? An Italian car? A drop top? But without the ubiquitous DOHC we know and love. Let me think about this for a bit…

  2. OK, I was mislead by the flag (maybe it’s Irish) and I presume a deliberate red herring. If it’s not a drop top but has the splint windshield I’m going to assume it’s American. The engine block is very confusing. Vrooomie is probably correct in that it’s a flathead something.

  3. This is beyond my automotive knowledge.

That’s a really odd design — having the windshield / firewall so far over the engine. It looks like there are another three cylinders behind the windshield. I’d think that the back end of the engine would have to intrude on the driver / passenger compartment.

  4. This is a highly modified car, purpose-built for a specific sort of race (hint: flag!)

That said, the body is a regular car, and the engine is from another regular car. Both cars are orphans, but Paul was right in that eventually they both ended up as part of AMC in one way or another.

  5. Damn, I’m so slow. The flag is not Italian or Irish but Mexican. I bet this is an old American Iron special built for the Carrera Panamericana. Now what is it, exactly…(puts thinking cap on)…?

  6. You are on the right track!

Some hints: The car was one of many attempts to create a post-war “peoples car” (ala Ford T) here in the US. The manufacturer was well-known for manufacturing things other than cars. The engine is from a famous marque who had vanished from the memories of all but the most ardent car guys until it was famously resurrected on the silver screen a few years back.

  7. Well I got the point of the car in the end although ( I wasn’t too swift in the process) but I have to admit me the Kaiser is on the very periphery of my automobile knowledge and I didn’t have a clue about the engine. Good one, Chuck! Anyone with a suitable car and a spare $50,000 up for the Carrera in 2009?

  8. Was the rest of the car ‘tube-framed,’ as is the front? Looks like some good race prep! The Carrera t’is one of those events (along with pro rallying) that, were I to be cursed with a big bag of money, falling from the sky, I’d like to give a try!

  9. Man, were I filthy rich…

    “A wolf in lambs clothing.”

This is the kind, PRECISELY the kind, of sensibilities I possess. Find an *unlikely* body, make appropos mods to it, then go piss on a Corvette’s pants leg.

Guess it’s a lucky thing I’m broke….I’d *terrorize* people with unlikely vehicles!

Kinda like “Deal’s Wheels:” Remember those?
