Car Photo of the Day: Light at dark

I’m not a Porschephile, BUT… I’ve always had a liking for these old Targas and those “flower” wheels that were popular in my early 70s childhood. I was attracted to this particular Targa more however for the wonderful reflection of the Pacific Ocean sunset in its paint. This was actually shot in VERY low light… hand held… using my digicam’s “night” setting, so it was surprising to get as good color as it did. Still not as good as it was in-person though. Beautiful evening at Otter Crest on the Oregon coast two summers ago, a night’s rest after a day of competitive TSD Rallying at the Monte Shelton Northwest Classic. While most folks were having drinks, I was wandering about the area where the cars were parked shooting photos in the amazing light. By the time I got to this Porsche it was almost gone.

  1. “While most folks were having drinks, I was wandering about the area where the cars were parked shooting photos…”

And while most folks at the MacWorld Expo were having drinks, you were in your room blogging.

Come on, Chuck, you’re in San Francisco. Get out and enjoy that legendary SF food…(and have a couple of beers, too).

PS The weather up here is still vile. Now we’ve got an icy cold permeating rain.

  2. CG, those are the ubiquitous (and astonishingly strong!) Fuchs wheels. Wanna see a P-car nutzoid go ballistic? Head for the alloy lug nuts with a rattle wrench…almost worth the call to 911 to see the reaction!

    🙂

  3. Interesting subject and one that is near and dear to my heart as I spent the better part of three months working with these wheels. There is an artisan named Mike Lindsey who takes these Fuchs wheels, cuts the centers out and welds the centers to 17″ BBS barrels so that more modern (and plentiful) rubber can be mounted. I have a set on my 930:

It’s interesting to note that the wheels mounted on today’s 997 and 996 GT3’s were modelled in honor of the Fuchs wheels:
