Hmmm..let me think about this for a bit…
Well it’s not British and or Italian. I don’t think it’s American so I’m going to guess German. Not Porsche, obviously -Mercedes perhaps?
Now I’m pretty sure it is a Merc. The slots in front of the hood (on the scuttle) are the key.
Yes. It is a Mercedes-Benz 450sl to be exact.
That cam cover should have been the dead giveaway, as that shape up front where the timing chain goes is the same on every M-B engine from the late 40s, through the 80s… even the Diesels, or as the Germans say “oelmotor”

Chuck : I thought it was distinctive but generally speaking I can’t tell apart the engine in an german car from an elephant’s ear (except for the lump in a Posche 911 which has me shaking with trepidation -but that’s another story).
Oh, shot in the dark…1979 450SL?
No fair David… you were there! 😉
(Doesn’t journalistic integrity require that you recuse yourself?!) 😀
Journa-what?
Where WAS that smell from, anyway?
Believe it or not, a loose gas cap.
