Car Photo of the Day: Did somebody mention Lucas?

Poor Lucas, always the butt of jokes when British cars come up. Prince of Darkness, warm beer, Dim, Flicker, & Off. Is the reputation warranted? More importantly, can you name this car?

  1. I can’t tell. You’ve has a lot of XKSSs on you site and they are all the same colour. Wiggy could be correct. It’s not a D and it doesn’t look like a 120. I’ve seen those air cleaner boxes before but can’t remember where…

Lucas and Italian electrics are always fair game for a cheap shot but the absolute worst electrical problems I’ve had have been in two VW Beetles and a 911SC. The latter in particular drove me to distraction and we parted acrimoniously.

  2. I gotta say this: pre-1970 Lucas electrics were no more or less reliable than any otrhers I worked on. The absolute worst? Ducellier, on froggie cars!

The troubles they did have were almost always just old wiring, or DPOs who’d tried to fix the wiring themselves.

  3. Back in student days, my Citroen 2CV was a very reliable car and I could fix everything myself (I once changed a rocker arm by the side of the road). The minimal electrics presented no problems. I suspect a 1970 Citroen SM might be another kettle of fish, though…!

I haven’t heard “DPO” before; can you expand?
