This one could be really tough. Continuing on the theme of odd engine bay shots with straight-eight mills….

I know what the engine is, and apparently the make (given the radiator), but the open-wheeled aspect certainly is something new for the marque. Is this a complete car or has someone removed the fenders?
It is (was) a race car.
So Roger… don’t hold back, what is it?
That’s a Packard radiator and a Packard straight-8 engine, so it must be a Packard. Surprisingly, the only online references (without a ton of searching, mind) talk of a couple of Packard racing cars, one a 12 cylinder from the teens and a six-cylinder from the early 20’s. I would say this car is from the early 30’s, but have nothing other than hunch to back that up.
Congrats on the RR of the Day on Autoblog. 😉
Thanks Nick. Now that you live on this side of the lake we’ll have to get together for dinner or something. I’ve yet to meet your wife you know!
I woke up today to everybody iChatting/emailing/calling me to say they say the car on autoblog. I haven’t even had a chance to shower yet!
We definitely have to. Seems the only time I see you is when I’m breezing past to head to the colo.
You had some great images up there, a car definitely deserving of the ride of the day. I bet you hit the Ride of the Week this week. 🙂
Well, lets not be so sure, that gorgeous Hudson lost to an Acura NSX last week, so if some flash car shows up, I’m doomed. Us old guys can’t compete! 😉
Let’s pick a night soon and grab a beer or something.
Oh yes, and Roger… you are right. It is a Packard!

I wish I knew more about it, but I don’t.
Miles Collier & Scott George brought it to the Colorado Grand last year. The route book said it was a Porsche, but I suspect it was a late-addition/replacement. Knowing the Collier collection, I’m sure it is a machine with a pedigree, but I neglected to ask about it! Sorry.
