Last try at “stump Paul”…

Late last week, Paul Wigton (aka “Vroomie”) said he didn’t bother to participate in my little “name that car” games because they were “too easy”… so I’ve been trying to stump him all week. I’ve tried the vein of “oddball American iron” from the 30s, the 50s, and even the teens, but failed each time. Let’s fast-forward to the age of big hair and bell bottoms… what should be Paul’s sweet spot of teenage car recognition, and see if he can name this decidedly NOT oddball one.

  1. OK….it’s Tuesday and I am BACK! Was off sick on Friday…coff coff…and have had a good weekend!
Chuck, this MAY be my undoing, but here we go: since the car is a RHD, it’s clearly not American; I believe it is Australian, specifically a Holden, but the precise model, I’m not sure..Torana, I think.
So, do I still get administrator priveleges or not?..;)

  2. I don’t know about his admin privileges Chuck … Toranas were never this big! 😉

and Roger – I believe a lot (if not all) of your old British cars would have similiar “weedy little exhaust pipes” 🙂

  3. I think it’s a 1973 Holden Belmont wagon…but can’t be sure. Not sure I want to be sure. 😉 And Jerome, I’m the king of weedy exhaust pipes.

Naw…only the ones with *weedy* engines, like A-H Frogfaces, or Austin Marinas, or Hillman Imps, or, speaking of Hillmans, (*shudder, urp, tummyache*) Sunbeam Alpines!…;)
the jag most CERTIANLY had non-weedy exhaust tips!…;)

  5. in fact it is a ’72 Holden Kingswood – 202 ci straight 6 – my 17 son’s first car that he bought in Feb this year – we are trying (still) to get it back on the road – nearly there – check the link on my name for the web site and the ‘cars and stuff’ link to see the saga so far – not having a big enough garage to work in doesn’t make life easy….

Jerome – who grew up on BMC rubbish with weedy exhausts!

  6. Hey! Due to my ex-wife’s being an Aussie, I shoulda known this! We had ALL the episodes of ‘Kingswood Estates” ( I think that’s the shows name!)! Well, I get 50% right, for knowing it was a Holden! “Barely Holden” together, was what I was told …;)
Wish us Yanks would have gotten the smaller-cube Chevy 6s..smallest we ever got was the 250…AD I’m STILL looking for the triple SU manifold for the one I’ve got!
I feel your pain, Jerome, re: the too-small garage: I’m attempting to do the resto of Tweety *AND* side jobs in a 2-car arage….not fun! but, until I get ahead enough to build my “Garage Mahal,” it’ll do…..!

  7. they had smaller 6’s in the earlier Holdens and also in this model I believe they had a 186 – probably in the base model Belmont – the 186 motor seems to have been better thought of than the 202 – think it would rev better and was lighter – hopefully in less than a week we will have the HQ on the road legally again – they are a bit strict here letting older cars back on the road and are just about to (again) start testing for smoky cars in our 6 monthly warranty of fitness tests… another hurdle for the HQ as the motor is a bit sad but once warm runs reasonably smoothly… there will always be something to do with this old heap…

the garage is so narrow I had to temporarily cut ‘ears’ in it to get my later Aussie Fords wing mirrors in! (and then move the studs as far as I could) – you can’t even open one door fully when inside… and no room on section to do anything about it… a bit sad
