That modern & chromed front suspension says “custom” to me, as well as the location among the new Mercs & Ferraris
The “Modern” cars behind were the participants in the Forza Amelia rally, who were allowed to be parked on the field that year… sort of off to the side along the little golf-cart track. There were some notable cars there too including a very early Ferrari being driven by a very nice couple from Florida, and several 300sls.
IIRC this lineup was all a bunch of vintage Indy cars.
I’ve seen this car, in photos; I believe it’s a Ford-based modified Indy car, circa late 20s/early 30s. I believe it’s illustrated in Griffith Borgeson’s landmark work, “The Golden Age Of The American Racing Car’ book. I’ll peruse my copy soon and see if I can find the particulars on it.
The poor mechanic who had to ride along in those days…oi vey!
